@Fred: Sorry Fred but I don`t exactly know - I imagine that it would be set on fire during a religious festival. Sakurajima is an active volcano - you can go and stay there. Its in Kagoshima prefecture in Kyushu, Japan. Really lovely to see.

thanks everone - I was sitting in an outdoor thermal pool (really hot, but in the middle of January so the air was freezing), having just watched the sunrise. Great place to visit if you ever get the chance.
